Location: Des Moines Enter the park and continue on to the Beach Parking area. Then you should see the entry stairs along the retaining wall. |
|
| Description: Descend down the entry stairs then swim out towards the barge on a compass heading of 270. This was picked as one of the sites designated for enhancements under Senate Bill 5076. This bill would authorize the creation of twenty Marine Protected Areas in Puget Sound. This site could do for some improvements and it is a great candidate as a future 'Edmonds Underwater Park' like site. That are a lot more facilities here than at Edmonds, especially parking. The area now is mostly eel grass and sand. There is a barge here but it has mostly fallen apart and it is quite swim out to it. It is a good area for a check out dives as the currents are minimal at this site. |

| Reviews: This site is good a example of what the state's Parks Department, with $250,000 has been unable to accomplish versus one man's determination has accomplished at Edmond's UW Park. I followed the developments of 5076 for a while, but to tell you the truth, it was sickening to watch the state at work, plodding along wasting money at every turn. - John Syre |

Personally, I think this is an interesting site. This is the only
place in Puget Sound I've dived that had a water temp of 76F.
But, (a big BUT) that was after two weeks straight of 90 degree
weather, it was a low tide, and it was only on the surface.
At a depth of 30fsw, the water temp returned to a normal 50F.
Although it doesn't have as many "things" underwater as the
park at Edmonds, there is still a lot of sea life, plus the
facilities are better. The barge (what's left of it) is rather
interesting, kind of a "ghost ship"-like appearance. There are
underwater placards that tell you what kind of sea life is in
the area. I was reading one about dog fish just when one went
zooming by, cool!
